Ms. Getrude Okutoyi Alworah has over 12 years of experience as a Research Scientist, trainer, and
technical expert in the field of coffee crop protection and production systems at Coffee Research
Institute, Kenya. She is currently undertaking her PhD in Crop Protection at Egerton University, Kenya
in collaboration with the University of Pretoria, South Africa. She holds an MSc. in Crop Protection from
University of Nairobi (2016). Ms. Alworah has undertaken studies and field experiments on sustainable
management of coffee pests, agroforestry, coffee-food crop systems, sustainable coffee production,
coffee crop nutrition and soil fertility management and organic coffee farming. She has developed
technical and training materials for composting, vermicomposting, green manuring, gender and social
inclusion in the coffee sector, climate change and coffee production, and integrated pest management.
She has collaborated in 9 projects in different capacities as a technical expert and published several
books, book chapters and technical manuals and reports. She has trained over 700 farmers on organic
coffee production and facilitated their successful transition from conventional farming, over 1000
farmers on IPM, and over 200 coffee wet mill managers on coffee processing and quality management.
Additionally, she has vast experience in institutional relations having worked collaboratively with the
Pest Control Products Board (PCPB), the Kenya Plant Health Inspectorate Services (KEPHIS), and
County Governments and International organizations such as CIRAD France, World Agroforestry
Centre Kenya, SOLIDARIDAD E&CA, PASGR, Danish Refugee Council and CABI. She also has
experience working with farmer organizations such as KTDA, Murang’a Farmers Union, Mutira FCS,
Kibirigwi FCS, Kirurumwe FCS and Kipkelion Farmers’ Cooperative Society among others. She has
experience in undertaking training and technical backstopping in projects funded by the European
Union, African Union, French Development Agency as well as the Kenyan Government. Ms. Alworah
has provided technical support to coffee farmers’ cooperative societies seeking certification in Organic
farming, Rainforest Alliance, and the Common Code for the Coffee Community (4Cs). Ms Alworah has
extensive knowledge on the European Union deforestation Regulations (EUDR) having participated in
various discussions and sector forums in Kenya and USA. Details of training manuals, technical
